Programme Description 

Embark on an exciting journey led by the Professors and instructors from Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Hong Kong into the dynamic fusion of technology, cultural narrative, and cutting-edge educational approaches with "Multimedia Innovation: Crafting Culture through Digital Storytelling, VR and AR." This course incorporates the latest advancements in Web 3.0 and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education, offering an even richer learning experience. In this course, you will: 

  • Explore the Evolution of Storytelling in the Digital Age: Learn how storytelling has transformed with digital technologies, including the impact of Web 3.0 on narrative creation and dissemination. 

  • Master Audio Narratives in Podcasting: Become a pro at creating audio narratives in podcasting, focusing on making them resonate with cultures. 

  • Virtual Reality (VR) & Augmented Reality (AR) Adventures: Immerse yourself in the realms of VR and AR, discovering how these technologies offer new dimensions to cultural storytelling. 

  • Multi-Cultural Storytelling from Various Perspectives: Learn the art of storytelling, focusing on multicultural narratives, emphasizing respect, authenticity, and diverse possibilities. 

But that's not all! Throughout this course, we'll delve into the world of cultural identity through digital storytelling, discussing how to represent different identities and cultures, why representation matters, and how digital storytelling can help preserve and celebrate cultural diversity.

Course Designers and Instructors: 

Gang Liu (https://www.cmu.edu/dietrich/modlang/about-us/filter/faculty/gang-liu.html) is a Teaching Professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies in the department of Languages, Cultures and Applied Linguistics at Carnegie Mellon University. He has developed and taught Chinese language courses at all levels and content courses on business language and culture in China, traditional Chinese poetry, literature and thoughts, Chinese ghost stories and culture, modern Chinese society and Chinese documentary films, perception of China through YouTube and TikTok, and Chinese mythology and animation creation. His research interests include classical Chinese poetry, literati miscellanies, Chinese as a Foreign Language (CFL) pedagogy, and technology enhanced learning. He co-edited/authored four books published by Peking University Press, Tradition and Transition: Teaching Chinese Culture Overseas, Living overseas: Cases, Strategies and Guidance for CFL teachers around the World, Cross-cultural Communication: Teaching Chinese in the Global Context and Tales of Teachers: Case Studies and Reflections from CFL Classrooms in North America. He is also the author of the bestselling children’s book series Luoluo ting’s Adventure in Ancient Chinese Mythology. 

Stephan Caspar (https://www.cmu.edu/dietrich/modlang/about-us/filter/faculty/stephan-caspar.html) is an Associate Teaching Professor of Media Creation and Multicultural Studies in the Department of Languages, Cultures and Applied Linguistics at Carnegie Mellon University. He has a background in creative media and design, training as a filmmaker before moving into education. He worked in film production and TV broadcasting, including at the BBC as a Content Producer, before becoming Head of Creative Arts at Fareham College in Hampshire, UK. In 2018, He joined CMU and became the Director of the Askwith Kenner Global Languages & Cultures Room. He specialized in VR creation, immersive design, and 360 ̇documentary. ​
