Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
I am not a native English speaker. What should I submit as proof of my English proficiency?
If English is not your first language, or if the medium of instruction at your home institution is not English, you will need a recognised and valid English language qualification to be admitted to our programme.
You are expected to provide English test results that meet at least ONE of the minimum English language requirements (please see below).
- IELTS score of 6.5
- TOEFL internet-based test: A score of 93 or above
- CET Band 4: A total score of 493 or higher and Band 6: A total score of 450 or higher.
- International Baccalaureate: Grade 4 in HL/SL English Language A: Language and Literature or Literature; SL English - Text and Performance or Literature and Performance (A1 Syllabus); HL English Language (B Syllabus); HL/SL English Language (A1 or A2 Syllabus); Grade 5 in SL English Language (B Syllabus).
- GCE: Grade C or better at English Language at GCSE/GCEO; English First Language at IGSCE; English Language or English Literature at GCE AS/AL; Grade B or better in English Second Language at IGCSE.
- Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English: Level C1 or an overall score of 180.
- Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English: Grade C or an overall score of 180.
- SAT: Sub-score of 610 or better in Reading and Writing of the SAT in the same attempt.
- Pearson Test of English Assessment (PTE A): A score of 64 (Academic).
If you do not have any of the above English test results, please upload your secondary school academic transcript or school report showing your most recent result in English, or any supporting document that can demonstrate your English proficiency is sufficient for learning and communication (e.g. a letter of reference from your institution). Applicants who are unable to provide sufficient evidence of English proficiency may be required to attend an additional online interview.

If I submit a member application, does it mean my admission to the Academy is guaranteed?
Talent nomination does not guarantee admission to the Academy. Your acceptance to the Academy must be endorsed by schools and the Advisory Board of The Academy for the Talented based on the criteria communicated.
How do I know if I am accepted by the Academy?
You will receive email notification from the Academy and you can accept the membership offer by using our online application system. Successful nominees will receive notifcation and application instruction through their personal emails. There is no membership fee for the Academy.
Are courses eligible for HKU credits?
Yes, some courses are eligible for HKU credits upon successful completion. Most credit-bearing courses will be offered during summer time.
I am concerned that I may not be accepted in a particular course, can I apply for more than one course?
You are encouraged to choose more than one courses in the application form. It is acceptable to choose courses that may have conflicting schedules at time of application; however, it is your responsibility to ensure the schedules of the courses chosen are not in conflict when you confirm your enrollment.
How will I know if I have successfully enrolled in a course?
Whenever there is an update on your course application status, you will receive an email from the system to inform you to login to the application system and check the latest status. Once your application is successful, you will then need to confirm your acceptance.
Can anyone apply for financial assistance?
Any member of the Academy may apply for financial assistance. For grant, you may select the grant option with your membership application. To maintain the sponsorship, members are required to renew their applications when new session begins. Academic standing, attendance, and recommendation will be considered in determining eligibility for renewal.
Scholarships are available for most of the courses the Academy is offering. Most of the scholarships are bestowed based on good academic standing and attendance. For amount and details, please refer to Academic Programmes section.
If I am eligible for financial assistance, do I still need to pay for the courses?
Payment status for grant applicants is on case-by-case basis. For scholarship sponsorship, members will pay for the courses in advance and be reimbursed at the end of an academic session.
I am a foreign citizen and not a Hong Kong resident. Do I need to obtain a student visa if I am accepted into the Academy Pre-University face-to-face programmes?
All students without the right of abode/right to land in Hong Kong must apply for a student visa for the purpose of education from the Hong Kong Immigration Department.
Do I need to renew my Academy Membership every year?
No, the membership is permanent and does not expire. We encourage students to update their personal details and other particulars annually through the portal.
Can I cancel my application or withdraw from the programme? Will there be a programme fee refund?
Both the programme fee and application fee are non-refundable.
Programme withdrawal with a compelling reason(s) and supporting documents submitted will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
For students who need to absent from any of the scheduled classes and activities, their parents/guardian should submit leave of absence request to the HKU Academy for the Talented. All days/periods of leave/absence, including sick leaves and absences from activities or classes must be reported to the HKU Academy for the Talented in advance. Failure to apply for leaves and absences as instructed will be considered as discontinuing the programme. No certificate of completion, statement of result will be arranged.
Can I be awarded a scholarship after joining your programmes?
Scholarships are available for most of the courses the Academy is offering. Most of the scholarships are bestowed based on good academic standing and attendance. As all participants are top students, we will evaluate their performance in the programme.
