This course introduces students to the area of data science. Learn about data handling, analysis, and hypothesis testing using statistical methods and tools like spreadsheets, R, and Python.
Explore diverse science subjects and the collection and analysis of data. Gain a deeper understanding of data use in research, interdisciplinary nature, and develop skills towards becoming a professional scientist.
Learning Objectives:
- Learn about data and its life cycle.
- Gain the ability to generate and collect data.
- Use the appropriate statistical method for a given data set and hypothesis to be tested.
- Use technology and statistical methods to analyze, manipulate, and communicate data effectively.
- Summarize and communicate results in a data science investigation.

- Target Audience: Academically high achieving Year 12 and 13 high school students (Secondary 5 - 6) between the ages of 16 - 17
- Group Size: 5 students, approx.
- Tuition Fees: HKD 62,000* (HKD55,800* - 10% discount available for HKU Academy for the Talented members)
- Comprising lectures, social activities, airport pickup, as well as accommodation with breakfast and dinner (additional charges may apply).

Programme name: Global Perspectives in Life Sciences: HKU-University of Edinburgh Collaborative Programme
Description:
This course is designed to introduce life sciences to students who are considering it for university study. You will be equipped with problem-solving skills to explore the role of life sciences in daily life, such as diseases, through real-life research, science investigations, and discussions with scientists. You will develop a deeper understanding of the knowledge and theory as well as engaging in interdisciplinary research. The course also includes visits to other science organizations and offers opportunities for you to meet and speak with scientists studying or working at the university. Embark on your journey towards becoming a professional scientist!

- Gain knowledge of the interdisciplinary nature of science.
- Critically analyze and draw conclusions from scientific data.
- Design and plan a well-structured scientific investigation in groups and under the supervision of the course teacher.

Applicants are responsible for arranging their own travel to and from their home country, as well as transportation between Edinburgh and Hong Kong.
