Description:

The Faculty of Law, Faculty of Arts, HKU Business School at the University of Hong Kong and Deacons will hold a Summer intensive programme tailor-made for our talented students exclusively. This 4-day programme provides a unique opportunity for students to develop an initial understanding of the core subjects taught in the Bachelor of Laws degree and Postgraduate Certificate in Laws**.

Students will explore a range of courses taught in the first and second years of the HKU Law undergraduate degree and to gain a glimpse into the Postgraduate Certificate in Laws, with a unique taster class offered by a law professor of this postgraduate programme, including subject areas/modules such as the below:

·       The Legal system of the Hong Kong SAR

·       Law and society

·       Law of Contract

·       Legal Research and writing

·       Land Law

·       Law of Tort

·       Civil litigation in the Postgraduate Certificate in Laws.

This programme will include lectures, sessions of court rooms, admissions information, and talks from guest speakers from various legal and business fields.

Deacons will offer an engaging, inspiring and informative session to the participants. This includes a workshop on commercial practice and a talk on the path to the legal profession, as well as sharing by vacation students, trainee solicitors and lawyers.

Learning outcomes:

To develop your legal writing skills, expand your legal knowledge, learn from our HKU Law students, and be inspired by eminent law professors.

After successful completion of the programme, students will be invited to shadow some of the law courses taught during term time and will have a chance to work with our emeritus professor on law projects.

Those who perform well in the final project/competition will have the chance to join the Early Insights Programme of Deacons, Hong Kong’s largest and oldest independent law firm, and work with the firm’s lawyers the week following the completion of the Legal Academy for the Talented.

Early Insights Programme of Deacons:

This one-day internship*** provides top students of the mooting competition an overview into the different legal services Deacons offers, as well as giving participants the opportunity to partake in real legal tasks and get a glimpse of life as a lawyer.

*It is our firm belief that no student should be denied admission due to financial difficulties. Grant is available for students who can provide supporting documents issued by the Student Finance Office for receiving a full grant of Student Textbook Assistance Scheme or documents from the Social Welfare Department for obtaining CSSA. To apply, please select the specific programme on the system accordingly.
