HKU Academy x NTU: Urban Sustainability Faceoff

Programme Overview:

This is an immersive programme jointly organised by The University of Hong Kong (HKU) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore.

Urban sustainability is more than an environmental concept: It also includes social and economic issues, accommodating multi-cultural and diversified aspirations, ensuring public engagement and nurturing public participation and partnership in the development process. This program explores how Hong Kong responds and reacts to various issues related to sustainable urban living. As a global city with unique cultural, historical, economic and political setups, sustainability is a pressing concern and holds the key to the long-term urban development of Hong Kong. The emphasis of the programme is on understanding sustainable urban development in the context of a high-density, market-oriented Asian world city.

Besides, this programme will offer a comprehensive exploration of the principles, practices, and challenges associated with building a sustainable future. It will delve into sustainable development, Singapores drives towards sustainability, advanced environmental engineering of environmental resources, such as water, waste and energy through environmental, social, and economic perspective, examining how they influence our world and the decisions we make. 

Learning Outcomes:

    • Develop both a localised and comparative perspective to the understanding of the challenges that Hong Kong faces in maintaining its competitive role in the Greater Bay Area and the world.
    • Learn about sustainability, through looking at general aspects of sustainability, sustainable development, climate change, and Singapores drives towards sustainability. 
    • By understanding the fundamental concepts of sustainability, students will develop the critical thinking skills necessary to evaluate complex issues and contribute to positive change. 
    • This course will equip students with the knowledge and tools to become a responsible global citizen and a leader in creating a sustainable world for generations to come. 

Assignment: Group Presentation at Nanyang Technological University 

Students will present their presentation based on the topic provided. 

Other activities include : Pop-up quizzes, In-class experimental demonstration, In-class discussion with hands on tutorial exercises

Programme Duration: July 2-4, 2025 (3 days) at HKU, July 7-11, 2025 (5 days) at NTU

Target Audience: Academically high achieving Year 12 and 13 high school students (Secondary 5–6) between the ages of 16– 17

Tuition Fees: (Non-refundable Application fee: HKD 60)

    • Non-members: HKD 38,000
    • Members: HKD 34,000

    • Departing from Hong Kong to Singapore: July 6, 2025 (Time: To be confirmed) 
    • Departing from Singapore to Hong Kong: July 12, 2025 (Time: To be confirmed)

Transportation included: 

    • Airport transfer to/from Singapore Changi Airport to/from hotel if you take the recommended flights suggested by HKU (info will be provided by May 2025)
