An Introduction to English Poetry
Programme Description
This is an introductory poetry course for students who are interested in poetry or want to have a taste of English poetry taught at the university level. We will learn the basic elements of poetry, including a variety of musical and metrical devices, imagery, voice, speaker, and figurative language, and different forms of poetry such as ballads, sonnets, blank verse, and free verse. We will apply those poetic devices to analysis of poems by looking into some representative works of the major poets, identifying basic poetic concepts, and analyzing the functions of the different elements. We will occasionally use visual tools as the gateway to further discussion, as poetry inherently aligns itself with art with its emphasis on imagery and many poems lend themselves to artistic representations. Through this course, students are invited to appreciate the profound insights and elevated sentiments of the great poets and enjoy the beauty of their poems, in the process of which they will enhance not only analytical skills but also critical thinking ability, aesthetic sensibility, and imaginative power.
