Language and You: An Introduction to Linguistics
Programme Description
Language is something that often goes unnoticed even when we use it every single day, in many different forms. We use language for communication, expression, and social connection, and linguists have developed tools to try to make sense of this crucial dimension of human life. This summer course will offer students an overview of how to study language, understanding it as both a system and a tool, and why it is important to do so. Students should expect to gain a deeper appreciation for what linguists do, how language operates in and through society, and conduct basic linguistic analyses of textual data. Contemporary case studies will be used during the course to demonstrate language as it is used by human actors, and we will go through datasets together to explore basic linguistic analysis. No prior knowledge of linguistics is required – just a curiosity for language.
