Programme Overview:
Actuaries investigate the risks associated with uncertain events and safeguard the stability of financial systems, especially within the insurance industry. This five-day workshop will provide participants with hands-on experience in applying high school mathematics to deal with introductory actuarial problems. Through this workshop, participants will learn essential statistical concepts and their relationship with actuarial applications such as the event of death in life insurance. They will also be introduced to some useful computational techniques that automate calculations, which are otherwise tedious to perform. At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will acquire knowledge on the basic workings of actuarial models and be able to solve simple valuation problems.

Learning Objectives:
On successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Describe basic probability models for human lifetimes
  2. Compute the present and accumulated values of non-contingent (certain) cash flows
  3. Identify the features and cash flows of common life insurance policies
  4. Identify the features and cash flows of common life annuity policies
  5. Perform simple statistical modelling tasks using software to determine the value of insurance and annuity policies
