Programme Instructors

Dr. Daniel MARWECKI
Daniel Marwecki is a lecturer at the Department of Politics and Public Administration. Daniel’s teaching is broad in scope, covering many areas in development studies and international security, with a special focus on the Middle East as well as Germany and Europe. His research has so far mostly focused on German-Israeli relations. Daniel’s book Germany and Israel: Whitewashing and Statebuilding appeared first in 2020 and is now available in paperback, as well as in an expanded and updated German edition. He received his PhD from SOAS University of London in 2019. Prior to joining HKU, he had taught at the Universities of Leipzig and of Leeds, as well as at SOAS. He received the “Excellent and Inclusive Practice Award” for his teaching in 2025. Daniel has written essays and commentaries for journals and newspapers such as Le Monde Diplomatique, UnHerd, Jacobin, taz, Berlin Review of Books, E-IR, Nueva Sociedad, Aufbau, Qantara, and others.

Prof. Peng WANG
Peng Wang is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology, the University of Hong Kong (HKU). He is an associate member of the Extra-legal Governance Institute at the University of Oxford, and he is an associate editor of Trends in Organized Crime. He holds a PhD in Law and an MA in Criminology and Criminal Justice from King’s College London. His research focuses on organized crime, corruption, economic sociology, institutional economics, police and policing, informal institutions, and China studies. He is the author of The Chinese Mafia: Organized Crime, Corruption, and Extra-legal Protection (Oxford University Press, 2017). He is also the author of Extralegal Governance: The Social Order of Illegal Markets in China (coauthored with Wanlin Lin, Cambridge University Press, 2025).

Prof. Bin CHEN
Bin Chen is an Assistant Professor at the University of Hong Kong’s School of Future Media. His research interests include computational social science, digital media and politics, social and political implications of emerging technologies, and comparative media studies. Bin received his PhD in journalism and media from the University of Texas at Austin, where he also earned an MSc in statistics and data science.
