
Programme Overview:
This exclusive programme offers a 4-week training course in clinical research, data analysis, and healthcare systems specially for local students. Selected students will participate in 6 months of practical research project experience, collaborating closely with supervisors from HKU. Participants will gain valuable exposure to medical research and will have the opportunity to present their work at international conferences. This experience is designed to enhance both their academic credentials and career prospects in the healthcare field.

Phase 1: Research Skills Workshops
- November 2025: Four weeks of thematic mass lectures on medical research, conducted by HKU professors.
- November 6, 2025 (Thu) 18:00-20:00: Professor Joshua Ho – Experimental Design and Research Data Analysis
- November 13, 2025 (Thu) 18:00-20:00: Professor Abraham Wai – Evidence-based Practice
- November 20, 2025 (Thu) 18:00-20:00: Professor PH Chung – Data-driven Policy Change in Global Health
- November 26, 2025 (Wed) 18:00-20:00: Professor Kevin Tsia – Health Technology Innovation
- December 2025: Assessment and announcement of student selected for Phase 2.
Phase 2: Research Project
- January 2026 onwards: Formation of research teams for eligible students and commencement of research projects.
Programme Instructors:
Professor Chung, Pui Hong
Professor Chung is an Assistant Dean (Health Sciences Admissions) and Clinical Associate Professor of Practice at the LKS Faculty of Medicine, HKU. A King Edward VII scholar, he specializes in Community Medicine and has received two gold medals for original research. With extensive experience in public health, he played a crucial role during the COVID-19 pandemic and currently serves as the Master of the Madam S H Ho Residence for Medical Students.
Professor Ho, Joshua Wing Kei
Professor Ho is the Assistant Dean (Innovation & Technology Transfer), Co-Director of Master of Biomedical Innovation, and Associate Professor in the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine at the University of Hong Kong (HKU). He completed his BSc (Hon 1, Medal) and PhD in Bioinformatics from the University of Sydney, and undertook postdoctoral training in at Harvard Medical School. He is an expert in bioinformatics, digital health, and medical AI. Professor Ho has over 155 publications, including first or senior papers in leading journals such as Nature, Nature Communications, Genome Biology, Nucleic Acids Research and Cell Systems. Professor Ho is also the Deputy Director of EdTech (AI), and Academic Lead of the Bioinformatics Core of the Centre for PanorOmic Sciences (CPOS) at HKU. He co-founded a digital health company Vitome Limited.
Professor Tsia, Kevin
Professor Tsia received his PhD at the Electrical Engineering Department at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) in 2009. He is the Programme Director of the Biomedical Engineering Programme at HKU. His research interests cover a broad range of subject matters, including ultra-fast optical imaging for imaging flow cytometry, cell-based assays for high-speed in vivo brain imaging, and computational approaches for single-cell analysis. He is currently a Hong Kong Research Grants Council (RGC) Research Fellow (2020).
Professor Wai, Ka Chung Abraham
Professor Wai is a Clinical Associate Professor of Practice at HKU, specializing in emergency medicine. Since joining HKU in 2017, he has led community health initiatives like the Revive-a-Life Programme and the Jockey Club Community Programme on Elderly Emergency Care. Recognized for his teaching excellence, he has received the Faculty Teaching Medal and the Early Career Excellent Teaching Award in 2021 and 2022.

*The programme fee covers teaching cost and guidance throughout the academic year. However, it does not cover expenses for international conference participation. Please note that all programme fees are non-refundable.

- S4-5 / Grade 10-11 / Year 11-12
- Keen interest in medical and health research
