Target: S3-6 students

Fees: Half scholarships*; Students shall pay the total amount HK$1975 directly to the Faculty of Arts.

Course Objectives
This five-day course is designed for secondary students interested in translating between Chinese and English. As the medium of instruction is Cantonese, students should be proficient not only in English but also in Cantonese.
The instructor will teach basic concepts and skills of translation and interpreting, preparing students for admission to a BA Programme in Translation in Hong Kong. Students will be required to take part actively in class discussions, in addition to doing homework and classwork.
Learning Outcome
After completing the course, students will acquire basic skills in translating and interpreting simple texts.
Course Structure (Tentative)
This course is divided into five parts:

-Introducing the Faculty of Arts
-Introducing translation concepts and references -Words in context
Day 2 (Tuesday, July 13, 2021)
-Language contrast and translation -Journalistic translation
Day 3 (Wednesday, July 14, 2021)
-Commercial translation
-Sight translation
-Submission of the homework (8pm, by email)
Day 4 (Thursday, July 15, 2021)
-Discussion of the homework -Doing classwork (60 minutes) -Consecutive interpreting I
Day 5 (Friday, July 16, 2021)
-Discussion of the classwork -Literary translation -Consecutive interpreting II -Revision
