HKUMed Programme

Summer Immersion Programme 

Programme Date:  Jul 31 – 4 Aug, 2023 (Mon – Fri)

Mode: Face-to-face (on HKUMed campus)

Eligibility: Current Secondary 5 / Year 12 / Grade 11 students

Programme Fee: HK$500

Registration: Enroll HERE starting April 1, 2023 from 10:00 for Academy Members only. Deadline for application is on May 31, 2023.

(Members of the academy will get the privilege to advance enrolment. Please note that all advance and regular applicants will receive offers at the same time via HKUMed, according to the academic result)

Selection and Result Announcement: All applications will be assessed according to applicants’ individual calibre and potential. Application result and payment details will be announced to successful applicants via email in July.

Programme Information:

The 5-day programme is an advanced programme for Secondary 5 / Year 12 / Grade 11 students that provides a wide range of activities. The programme includes clinical demonstrations, master classes by our academics, and sharing from current students / recent alumni about their experiences and journeys to becoming medical professionals. You will also participate in inquiry-based discussions on selected cases to apply your new knowledge, and have mentors to guide your learning.

You will have plenty of opportunities to network with our academics, students, and alumni, and connect with peers of similar minds.

Students who complete the programme will receive a participation certificate and memorabilia specially designed for this programme – further details to be announced.

First Step to Medicine

Programme Date: Jul 24 – 26, 2023 (Mon – Wed)

Mode: Face-to-face (on HKUMed campus)

Eligibility: Current Secondary 3-4/ Year 10-11/ Grade 9-10 students

Programme Fee: HK$300

Programme Information:

What does it mean to “study at HKUMed”? This “First Step to Medicine” programme for Secondary 3-4 / Year 10-11 / Grade 9-10 students (in the academic year 2022-23)* spreads across 3 days and gives a taster of the content and learning experiences you can expect. In this programme, you will gain fundamental knowledge across various medical and healthcare-related domains, including Medicine, Nursing, Chinese Medicine, Pharmacy, Biomedical Sciences, Bioinformatics, and Public Health. The 3-day comprehensive programme offers you a chance to learn directly from HKUMed’s academics and professionals and to gain early exposure to their teaching.

Students who have completed the programme will receive a printed participation certificate. Further details of the programme will be announced in due course.

*Priority will be given to students who did not participate in the “HKUMedify – First Step to Medicine” programme in August 2022.

Teenage OrthoPod Scheme 2023

Programme Date: Aug 7 – 11, 2023 (Mon – Fri)

Mode: In-person sessions held at HKUMed

Eligibility: Current Secondary 4-5/ Year 11-12/ Grade 10-11 students

Programme Fee: HK$500

Registration: Enroll HERE for Academy Members only. Deadline for application is on May 19, 2023.

Assessment / Pre-requisite(s):

This course is highly competitive. Applicants are required to submit a personal statement of between 350 and 1,000 words. From these submissions, a selected group may be invited for an interview, details to be announced.

Your statement should address the following:

  • Why you would like to join the Teenage OrthoPod Scheme (TOPS);
  • What distinguishes you from other applicants;
  • What you expect to be enriched by the TOPS experience;
  • Any additional points that demonstrate your interest and suitability for TOPS.

Programme Information:

Get an introduction to the fascinating specialty of orthopaedics surgery in this course designed for Secondary 4-5/ Year 11-12/ Grade 10-11 students. Students will participate in interactive workshops and be mentored by clinical staff from the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, School of Clinical Medicine. Assigned mentors are energetic, passionate, and will be delighted to share their insights and experiences. Subject to relaxation of the Emergency Response Level at the Hospital Authority, students may also shadow orthopaedic surgeons during their daily clinical duties. Detailed course components include:

1. Learning to apply plaster casts

2. Fracture fixation using implants and power tools

3. Observation of surgical demonstrations via virtual reality

4. Demonstration of cutting-edge technology that is impacting patient care (i.e. artificial intelligence in surgical planning, and computer navigation-aided surgery)

5. Sharing sessions from orthopaedics specialists, medical students, and patients

6. Shadowing orthopaedic surgeons in their daily activities such as ward rounds, outpatient clinic attendance, and operation theatre sessions (subject to Hospital Authority regulations during summer period)
